Eric Clapton – Wow!

January 31, 2007 · 8 Comments

Have you ever had a random encounter with someone that makes you wonder “what makes them tick”? I had such an encounter last night, when we had the good fortune to the Eric Clapton concert at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney.

I was seated next to a woman who would have been in her late 40’s. She was very well dressed, impeccably accessorised, with blond bobbed hair and not a hair out of place. The kind of woman you would expect to see lunching at Double Bay or Toorak. She stonily viewed the concert, not smiling with her arms either crossed or placed in her lap (at least we didn’t play armrest tussle). I think I saw her begrudgingly clap twice, around 5 meeting of the hands each time. She did not stand during the first ovation. I wondered if she had been dragged to the concert by her partner.

All this changed when Eric came back out on stage. He launched into the opening of “Cocaine” and this woman came to life! I swear she sat forward in her seat, she clapped her hands with delight (you know – in front of her face like a two year old at Christmas) and a broad smile crossed her face. Perhaps she would have been better suited at a J.J. Cale concert, but I suspect that I discovered what made this woman tick….

The evening began with a quick Japanese and Korean Buffet – a bit over 50 bucks for two (with juice) – a little rich for a few spring rolls & fried noodles. You’ll be thankful I didn’t have a camera, so I couldn’t do a John Chow (it wouldn’t have been pretty).

The concert was excellent. The opening act was a woman by the name of Mia Dyson who I hadn’t heard of before – interesting voice very throaty, like a combination of Melissa Etheridge, Tracy Chapman & Janis Joplin. Thought it would be good if she’d done a cover, as I don’t think her original songs were well known.

Eric Clapton has surrounded himself with the most amazing musicians. A lot of them were particularly “vintage”, but the sound was incredible. I found myself contrasting the Elton John concert, where the sound was simply not that great – in a purist type of a way, if that makes any sense – and I think he had to belt the songs out to be heard over the backing musicians. But EJ certainly had bounds of energy, played for 3 hours straight, sang lots of old favs and simply rocked the joint.

After the concert we walked through Darling Harbour back to the Casino where we had parked. It was a particularly balmy night – probably 27 degrees Celsius and really humid. We stopped at a bar for a drink and to rest my weary feet (the walk is not recommended in 3 inch stilettos)!

I ducked into the ladies before leaving and have to say I’m amazed at the items you can buy in a vending machine these days! The usual “feminine products” and those for the “safety” conscious, but also a two pack of breath freshening lollies, Lip gloss and perfume. As my husband says – it gives “Eau de Toilet” a whole new meaning!

All in all a terrific evening.

Sensis Looking for More Curry

January 30, 2007 · 4 Comments

It appears Sensis has committed to spending $100 million with US based Amdocs, to upgrade its technology over the next 5 years.

Michael Sainsbury writes :Sensis’s core revenues from its Yellow Pages business are coming under attack from US-based internet firms such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, as well as media groups such as The Australian’s publisher, News Limited.

These companies are developing better local search capabilities and tapping local small businesses, which have previously relied on local papers and the Yellow Pages for advertising revenues. To keep up, Sensis needs to cut its cost base and improve its internet offerings.

Australian Local Search – it’s all a bit Incestuous

January 29, 2007 · Leave a Comment

It’s probably well known that Truelocal (which is owned by News Limited) acquired Australian Local Search (for a rumoured sum of around $12m) around 12 months ago prior to launching their business directory. It is stated on TrueLocal’s pages that their search and data is powered by Australian Local Search.

TrueLocalALS

(disclaimer: I run an Australian Online Business Directory which is in direct competition to TrueLocal and Yahoo! Local)

How Hot is the Aussie Cricket Team?

January 28, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Just watched some of the Australia vs N.Z. one-dayer. Our guys are on fire! It was beautiful to watch.

They shattered the 12 year old record for the most runs (previously 309) at the WACA and finished up 5/343. Let’s hope the Kiwis are able to maintain a little more dignity than the Poms in their Australia Day match…

Update 11.05 pm: Kiwis fight back – putting on a good show. Let’s hope the rain holds off, because applying the Duckworth-Lewis rain rule is no way to win a match.

Good to see Hayden get his ton.

This “power play” concept is interesting, do they still have fielding restrictions for the first 15 overs? Suppose I’ll have to have check it out.

Update 12.06 am: Great game! Jacob Oram – what a star (and how tall is that man?). Fastest NZ ODI 100 (71 balls). So close, and yet….

The Man or the Money Dating Promo

January 27, 2007 · 4 Comments

Being an advertiser on Mix 106.5 in Sydney we have known about “The Man or the Money” promotion for quite some time (and had to remain tight lipped).

I love this promotion, and wished we had enough spare cash to co-sponsor it for dLook Dating, as it would have been a perfect fit. The promotional pitch was excellent.

The idea is that for 2 weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day (and this runs in Sydney, Melbourne on Mix 101.1 and Brisbane 97.3 FM), there are 10 bachelors (aged between 24 & 41) who interview potential dates throughout each working day. At the end of the day, they choose who they with to go out with that evening. The winning “date” has to decide whether to go on the date, or accept cash instead. There is a follow up “kiss and tell” the following morning.

The website has a couple of bugs that you should be aware of. Don’t hit the “back” button or you will be taken out of the site entirely. The descriptions for some of the guys are cut off (you have to click in the info screen to scroll down) , and it’s not really obvious that there will be “more information” on the “video” tab, but I suppose anyone interested enough would click there anyway.

It will be interesting to see how well the two mediums cross-over & what kind of traffic they get to The Man or the Money website.

Netvibes in Australia

January 26, 2007 · 8 Comments

A small mention at Mashable today about a local version of the Netvibes home page now being available in Australia so I thought I’d mosey on over & take a peak.

First mistake was going to www.netvibes.com.au (don’t bother going it’s full of unrelated CPC advertising). Now I would have thought that they would have THAT base covered. So off to the real site which is supposed to update with local content if you haven’t been there before, but I have.

The instruction says “Australian users can now access local content through the “Add content” side bar. First time visitors from Australia will automatically see the local version. (To change your language and local content, click on “settings” at the top of your Netvibes page)”.

Despite looking, I couldn’t find the “add content” side bar, but it *is* a busy page. But that was easily fixed by going to the settings, selecting “local content” and clicking on the map of Australia.

A couple of interesting observations. There is a “search the web” box, which allows you to search Google, Yahoo! and Live (also Snap), but unfortunately these have not been customised to the “.com.au” domains, so the search results are not localised which is a shame.

Links for News and other categories are fairly predictable, and then there’s a link to the Australian Web 2.0 bloggers in that network (great job guys). Namely:-Alan Jones, Ben Barren, Darren Rowse, Cameron Reilly, Richard Giles, Duncan Riley, James Farmer and Nik Cubrilovic (these blogs can all be accessed via the Australian Web 2.0 page).

What perplexes me is the list of “Best Australian Blogs”. I wonder how they came up with this list? And some of them appear to be NZ blogs. I’ve only heard of one of these bloggers and I have been looking quite closely at Australian Blogs lately. So here’s the list:

A Yobbo’s View, Allthings2all (which is a NZ blog), Daily Flute, danielbowen.com: Diary of an Average Australian, Deltoid, Fish8me.com, It’s A Matter Of Opinion, Katiefoolery, Larvatus Prodeo, Making Girls Run Since 1982 -, one foot down the rabbit hole, Samuel’s Blog, Silent Running (NZ?), Sir Humphrey’s (NZ), Slattsnews, SunnyO, The Currency Lad (which hasn’t been touched since August 06 – unless it’s moved), Tim Blair, image.a.nation.

I’m not saying that any one of these blogs don’t deserve to be there, but there seems a few notable omissions. Can’t say I’ll be using the Netvibes home page, but I certainly have a few Aussie blogs to check out.

Calling Australian Bloggers – Free Links worth $48,800

January 25, 2007 · 18 Comments

You probably know by now that I support Australian blogs and content. I also mentioned (once or twice!) that I run dLook.com.au, an Australian online business directory.

So, being Australia Day, and following on in the tradition of Tino Buntic and his 2,000 blogger initiative (haven’t got that link yet, Tino…) and being a proud Aussie, here goes…..

Given the rising popularity of blogging, I have created a dLook category for “blogs”, which will shortly have a link from our home page. I am offering the “best” 100 bloggers with Australian content a premium listing valued at $488 on the dLook site AT NO COST. We have assembled a 4 person panel made up of dLook staff to select the blogs.

Bear in mind that dLook is attracting over 300,000 visitors per month and growing. So, what do you have to lose?

Simply include your blog url in the comments section of this blog (and all Australian blogs submitted will stay as a link from this post, unless your blog is purely spammy and then Akismet will take care of you) and a short (25 words or less) description of your main subject matter (or major tags, if you like) and when you established your blog.

This promotion is limited to 100 blogs and strictly one blog url per person. And before anyone screams “copy cat” I have been working on an “Australian Blog” page for this blog and the dLook category before I’d even heard of Tino Buntic…

How much is your Blog Worth?

January 25, 2007 · 2 Comments

Another cool little tool along the lines of “vanity / ego searching“, certain to be popular with the PB’s (Professional Bloggers).

Courtesy of Blogging on Blogging.

A tool on “Business Opportunities Weblog” allows you to “value your blog” – powered by Technorati.

This blog (Dipping into the Blogpond) is worth $2,258.16 – do I sense an early retirement?!

In case you are wondering Techcrunch is worth $8,560,684.56 and Problogger is worth $2,445,587.28 – seems I’ve got a way to go…..

I was like a kid at Christmas today, opening a pretty package from Google. This gift may be old news to some – but inside was a really groovy Google branded digital photo frame! How cool!

TrueLocal Australia – Yesterday’s News

January 25, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I know this is “yesterday’s news” but worthy of a mention.

An article in the SMH about Gary Cox being hired as the new “boss” of truelocal.com.au. An excerpt below:

News Digital Media chief operating officer Nick Leeder said the appointment was part of the division’s plan to be a more aggressive player in the online local search market.
