Well you asked for it – you got it! As a follow up to yesterday’s post Top 100 Most Popular Australian Blogs, I managed to fumble my way around to (kind of) get this into some semblance of a clickable list.

Please note: Coming in at number 3 should be All For Women with an AU Alexa ranking of 880 (way to go Leigh) – I just didn’t have the energy to redo the list
Please advise any omissions or inaccuracies.
Modified from original list provided by Craig Harper (sidebar)
Update: Please see The Top Australian Blogs Index for the latest list.

Oh Meg, you are a gem!
And don’t worry about adding me just yet, it would be cheating as the blog is only a few weeks old.
Donnie // April 13, 2007 at 3:55 pm
Interesting Meg! How about http://www.accure.com.au/carpark??
Meg // April 13, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Hi Donnie
I reckon you’d just make it on Craig’s original list (better get those links cranking)
steph // April 13, 2007 at 4:40 pm
Wow, that’s interesting! Thanks so much for the mention. I’m gonna check out everyone on that list. We have so much bloggy talent in Oz.

Hi Steph
We sure do! Keep up the great work.
Thanks for dropping by

Meg,
I’m interested to hear how you incorporated Alexa ranking into Craig’s original list?
I did a quick review of number 76 (Fat planet) on your list just to see how carpark would compare and from what I can see on both Alexa and Technorati, Carpark has a higher rank but does not rate in the top 100 fro au? Am I missing something?
Please don’t get me wrong, making lists is not the reason I blog, but I am interested in the topic of how a blog is rated.
Meg // April 13, 2007 at 5:48 pm
Hi Donnie
Yes you are quite right – when Craig compiled his list, flat planet snuck in at number 99 with a Technorati rank of 41,764 (and remember these can change daily). Craig manually searched for the blogs, so as a first edition it’s highly probable that some blogs were overlooked and the list will probably change a bit. He’s called for feedback via his Ultimate Aussie Blogroll sidebar on his site.
So I took Craig’s list and then analysed these 100 websites (plus or minus a couple) according to where they ranked on Alexa (in Australia). I found that a few of these didn’t rate in Australia, but they did have an Alexa ranking overall, so numbers 72-92 were sorted by their global rank. 93 to 100 didn’t have a global rank either so these were placed according to their original position from Craig’s list.
As I used that as a foundation (and as you can imagine there are a lot of Australian blogs, and no one has a complete list – so it’s up to blog owners like you to put your hand up and say “what about me”? so they can be included on Craig’s next update), any blogs (except for a couple that jumped out at me) not on that list aren’t on mine.
YES – you should be on the list! According to the way I ranked – probably around the mid 60’s
As you can imagine manually checking Alexa ranks for 100 websites is very time consuming, so I’m not sure I can undertake to update this list on a really regular basis – but will attempt to do it from time to time.

Cheers,!

I am slightly confused as to what columns mean what (I’m not much of a techie) so some further clarification would be wonderful
Meg // April 13, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Hi Karen
Thanks for dropping by. The first column is the rank. The second is where the site ranks in Australia according to Alexa.com. The third is the address (URL) of the site. The fourth column refer to where the site was ranked on Craig Harper’s list (on his home page down the bottom right) and the last where the site rates on Technorati.com.
I hope that explains it a little better. In my previous post I linked to some other posts that might explain these things a little better. Craig’s list should help too!
Donnie // April 13, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Thanks Meg,
I can imagine how time consuming it must be!!
Keep up the great stuff (like this) on this blog.

Top 100 Australian blogs
Craig Harper has created a list of the top 100 Australian blogs based on Technorati rankings (which are based on the number of blogs that link to you). It’s in his right side bar near the bottom. Of course that…
Karen (misc mum) // April 14, 2007 at 7:52 am
Thanks Meg. Well that’s interesting to see that technorati isn’t the be-all-and-end-all of ranking, like it can be made out to be
Meg // April 14, 2007 at 9:46 am
Hi Donnie – just a little
, it’s all good though!
Meg // April 14, 2007 at 9:56 am
Hi Karen
I suppose there’s a few different ways of analysing, and each has their flaws. Alexa’s not perfect either!
Thanks for stopping by and congratulations on the success of your blog
Des Walsh // April 14, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Congratulations on doing this. I’d like to have been in and have pinged Craig with some Technorati rankings, but I’ve never done that well on Alexa – no doubt some seo expert could tell me why
But imho what’s more important than who’s in who’s out is that Craig and you have done these lists, which will be a great help to those of us who would like to know more about who is blogging in this wide brown land.
I live in hope that one day some of us will get an Aussie Blogcon together – or maybe a series of them from state to state – and then some more of us could get to know others.
I’d also love to hear some Australian business blogging success stories – like the amazing Bargain Queen, Sarah Goldstein, who by the way runs the excellent Sydney Webloggers Meetup Group – go to http://www.meetup.com for more info.
Meg // April 14, 2007 at 3:40 pm
Hi Des
Thanks! I’m sure you’d appreciate the onerous task of gathering all the websites – glad you gave a shout to Craig, as businessandblogging.com definitely should be on the list. No doubt Craig will tweak the list as he updates it (I’ll probably be off soon!)
Regarding Alexa – that is a peculiarity. I have another website which gets a LOT more traffic than my blog, but the Alexa rank is on par with this, so go figure! A lot of people don’t realise there is an Alexa add-on for firefox which is available at http://www.quirk.biz/searchstatus, so if you have a high percentage of firefox users visiting your site, that could be a reason.
It’s lots of fun discovering Aussie bloggers, isn’t it? Your Blogcon sounds like a terrific idea!
Thanks for stopping by, and for your input

Hi Meg! Great job!
I was wondering how my blog fits in…. I seem to have a good Alexa rating (even though most of my visitors use IE and are in Perth!), it’s 2345 for Aus, and 172043 global. BUT, you can’t find me on technorati, at all! Having some trouble there. I had my blog claimed, though it wasn’t updating or something, so I decided to delete it and start again, but now it won’t let me claim it at all (I’ve put in several support requests (a week ago), but no response). I’m actually not that worried about not being on Technorati, as I write such a niche blog (events in Perth), I wouldn’t get much traffic from there anyway. But I do wonder where I would fit in to lists like this, out of interest!
Meg // April 19, 2007 at 6:52 am
Hi Simone
Thanks for dropping in
That’s a tough one, because without a Technorati ranking the formula doesn’t work (it would effectively be saying that you have a Technorati Rank of 0).
With those Alexa Ranks (great stuff by the way) even a largish Technorati Rank would see you on the list.
I’ll certainly put http://www.enjoyperth.net on the list to be checked next update, no doubt they’ll get around to your request sooner or later!

Miss Smack – You’re most welcome!
Simone // April 19, 2007 at 11:35 am
Thanks Meg, oh, how exciting!
I’m actually surprised that Alexa rank is that low, as most of my visitors aren’t tech people, they’re just people googling ‘maintstream’ events, and landing on my page(and probably not even knowing that it’s a blog or what a blog is). For example, I’ve also got about 4 times as many email subscribers compared to RSS subscribers!
Kathie Thomas, VA // April 19, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Thanks for this Meg. Great to see. I first became aware of the list on Tuesday I think it was, after seeing a post by Des Walsh so I went off to our own Craig’s list (the Aussie version of course) and was delighted to see my blog there. And then I found out about the newspaper article today. I plan to visit all of them too – think I’ll be busy this weekend
Meg // April 19, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Hi Kathie
Craig’s Ultimate Aussie Blogroll is a terrific list, and a great initiative
I’m discovering lots of great blogs too, which I think is the more the point of the exercise than “who’s ranked where” – though I think it does spur us on in a way
. It’s great to connect in our little corner of the world!
Australia really does have a wonderful sense of community, and I think Craig is to be commended for instigating this.
I’ve merely put a different slant on it.

Hey meg,
I just started a blog last week regarding search engine optimisation and business strategies (both online and offline). Not sure if my blog would be accepted in the list above but would be interesting if it does. I believe I currently rank 4,573 in Australia but only have one link from technorati as of yet since i only started my blog recently.
Regardless, excellent job in putting together the list. Look forward to hearing from you soon.
